mGroomer interviews Maggie Mulligan, owner of Diamond in the Ruff in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Maggie shares how she got started and what she is doing to save on fuel costs.

What is your background in grooming?

My first job was at a local veterinary office where I gained lots of knowledge about canine behavior, health and basic grooming. I then went on to grooming school which led me to a position as a pet stylist at a salon. I very quickly became the salon manager and had the opportunity to train other animal lovers in the art of pet grooming.

How did you get into Mobile Grooming?

After years of managing a grooming salon at a large “box store” I made the decision to leave the corporate world and be my own boss. I had read articles about mobile grooming and fell in love with the concept, I thought how cool would it be to pamper pets in a healthy stress free environment?! So I followed my heart and started my own mobile grooming company!

How many vehicles/groomers do you have?

My company currently has 3 groomers and two mobile spa units.

What kind of vehicles do you have?

An Ambers Mobile Pet Salon and a Gryphon Trailer. AKA “Amber and Barbara”

Why does mobile grooming work for you?

Mobile grooming is my niche. I love everything about it and wouldn’t trade my job for anything. I enjoy the freedom of being on the road and having the opportunity to groom pets in a stress free environment.

What are you doing to manage rising fuel cost?

We have switched our power source from gas powered generators to shore power; it has helped offset the cost of fuel.

What is the funniest story or event that has ever happened to you while mobile grooming?

Funny things happen all the time when you’re mobile! One elderly client didn’t recognize her dog after being groomed! One client had us groom her daughter’s guinea pig!

What is your favorite breed to groom?

Yorkies and Maltese! I love the little ones!

How is it different being a groomer and running a mobile grooming business?

Being a groomer and managing a business are two completely different things. I had to designate time in my week when I am strictly a manager; otherwise it’s very difficult to juggle doing both at the same time.

What were some of the challenges you had to overcome in getting your business going?

The challenge was not getting the business going, but keeping up with it!

What was one of your worse mistakes?

In the beginning I focused so much on the grooming, I let a few of the business tasks get pushed to the side. I later had a lot to catch up on and regret not having had more balance in the early stages of the business. Luckily I learned from it and have created a system that works for me.

Pricing is a big deal in Mobile Grooming. How do you handle pricing for your services?

Our prices are generally about $10-$20 higher than what you would pay in a salon. What we provide is a professional service of pampering your furry loved ones; I think it is well worth it.

What is one of your best techniques to get clients?

Getting bright pink graphics put on the spa units have been our best advertisement! They look great and catch everyone’s attention!

Why did you sign up for mGroomer?

I wanted less paperwork and more convenience!

How has mGroomer helped your business?

mGroomer has helped me expand my company with other pet stylists. I am able to keep track of all the daily appointments right from my computer or iPhone. It’s wonderful!

What is your favorite feature of mGroomer?

That I can access it anywhere! Also, I love the mapping feature. Using this feature helps us to save gas money and time by booking our appointments in close proximity.

What would you tell other Mobile Groomer’s about mGroomer?

Get it! It has helped my company expand; stay organized and is extremely convenient.
