mGroomer interviews Rose Blue, owner of Rose’s Spa Day Mobile Grooming in Delaware, Ohio. Rose shares how she got started and about being at the Right place, at the Right time.

How did you get into Mobile Grooming?

I answered a bather brusher add in the paper, thought it sounded like fun since I love dogs. I loved it so much I started working there full time. After about 2 years the Groomer/owner that I worked for kept telling me I should learn to groom. She said she would teach me and I could go at my own pace and get paid accordingly. She finally talked me into it, as I didn’t think I had the patience for the full groom. But I gave it a try and LOVED it.

She came on hard times and had to close her shop, and I knew of a groomer in the area that was mobile and thought it would be a cool idea. I found a used van and was lucky enough to get it and had a handful of my clients from the shop I worked at. Today, five years later, I am on my second van from Wag’n Tails and have over 160 clients. What is nice is that most of my customers own multiple dogs. I groom anywhere from 30 to 40 dogs a week, working 4 and 5 days a week.

What is your background in grooming?

The groomer I worked for trained me, however I have gone to several shows and taken continuing education classes. I also have several video series and plan to continue to go to shows and seminars on a yearly basis.

Why does mobile grooming work for you?

I like being my own boss and I get to work my own schedule. Plus I think this is a much safer and relaxing way for a dog to get groomed. In my experience they tend to accept grooming much more easily than if they were in a salon.

What are you doing to manage rising fuel cost?

I make sure that my clients know when I will be in their “hood”. I let them know they really only have that option. I try to pay closer attention to where I’m going to be. I try to only drive a couple minutes between clients.

What is the funniest story or event that has ever happened to you while mobile grooming?

I was parked at the Meijer (a local retailer in my area) parking lot when I first started. I stopped there for something and one of the workers there said “Hey do you have a card?” Then he started talking about how his wife needs this and that done. I realized he thought I came to the house for people. Kinda hard to miss the big PINK poodle on the side of the van, but I had to explain to him I am a hair dress for DOGS!

How is it different being a groomer and running a mobile grooming business?

You have to be able to manage your time, and some people cannot work alone, there are times that you do not speak to a human in the work place for days.

You also have to consider at some point you will not be able to do a WHOLE county. You want to keep your route tight. That’s how you make the most money in the least amount of time.

You could be the best groomer on the planet but if you can’t manage your time well, or you have to be around people, it may not work for you since you spend a better part of your day alone.

Who was one of your mentors and what did you learn from them?

I really didn’t have any mentors. I do follow Jodi Murphy. I like her attitude and her work ethic. I’ve learned MANY mobile shortcuts from her and my favorite is bathing two dogs at the same time from the same home. There are times that can save you about 30-40 minutes off your stop.

I have one house I do three Westies and they all go in the tub at the same time. I get all three done in 2 1/2 hours!

What is your favorite breed to groom?

When they behave a Wheaton.

What were some of the challenges you had to overcome in getting your business going?

I was very lucky. Financing the van was the only trouble I had because you had to have so much money down. But as far as advertising and building my business I really had no trouble at all.

The majority of the advertising I do is on my Facebook page, which really only my current clients have access to. I also have a website and of course the graphics on my van.

I was extremely lucky to get into this business when and where I did. I groom where the Muirfield Golfing Tournament takes place and fortunately there is plenty of dogs to go around.

What was one of your worse mistakes?

I have been extremely fortunate and haven’t really had any big mistakes so far. I’m sure my day is coming.

What is one of your best techniques or approach you have done to get clients?

Whenever I run errands I just take the van. The best thing I did with the second van was put a thing on the fender with an arrow that says “please take one” and I put magnetic business cards on the van. Keeps them from interrupting me when I am grooming if all they want is JUST a card.

Pricing is a big deal in Mobile Grooming. How do you handle pricing for your services?

When I first started I just made my prices 10 to 15 bucks higher than the highest priced in house salon in the area. I also made a list of the dog breeds that were most difficult for me and took the most time and priced accordingly.

Why did you sign up for mGroomer?

I’m always trying to figure out a way to look at my schedule when I’m not in front of the computer. mGroomer was the best idea. I love it.

I tend to forget to make an appointment for someone before I get home even if I make a note. With mGroomer I don’t forget I can just do it right there. When I get home it’s on the computer. I don’t have to change it in two different places.

How has mGroomer helped your business?

It makes less work for me. No more having a list a mile long of calls to return when I get home.

I can better answer “when my next opening” question right then. Got the iPad handy and get my email. I can reply with a real date quickly.

What would you tell other Mobile Groomer’s about mGroomer?

Get it. You’ll love it.

What is your favorite feature of mGroomer?

I can use it on multiple computers. If I am at my parents and an email comes in and I need to make an appointment, I just hop on Mom’s computer and boom there’s my schedule.
